The world-famous museum opened a brand new outpost Friday featuring modern and contemporary art, only a few blocks from its flagship location on Fifth Ave. Though the Met first acquired a gaggle of Peruvian antiquities in 1882, the museum didn’t begin a concerted effort to gather works from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas till 1969, when American businessman and philanthropist Nelson A. Rockefeller donated his more than 3,000-piece collection to the museum.
The courtly Lieberman cultivated important collectors and secured for the museum 81 School of Paris masterpieces from Jacques and Natasha Gelman, as well as greater than 100 modernist works from the artwork dealer Pierre Matisse, the youthful son of Henri Matisse.
